Years later, “O” in Las Vegas still pushes the boundaries of what’s achievable in a production show – Las Vegas Magazine

At the risk of dating myself, I first witnessed the magic of “O” at the Bellagio shortly after it premiered on October 17, 1998. Specific acts may have faded from memory, but the emotional resonance of that night has lingered. The beauty of “O” feels tangible yet elusive; it resides in the pause between heartbeats, asking to be felt more than explained. From the haunting melodies to the gravity-defying feats, “O” captures the profound potential of the human body and spirit, stirring something deeply ingrained within us all.

More than 26 years after its debut, this ethereal production has enchanted over 20 million viewers through more than 12,000 performances. In a city built on ephemeral spectacle, “O” stands out as a Vegas institution, emphasizing that some performances transcend mere entertainment. Without a single spoken word, the narrative flows through movement, music, and visual symbolism, creating an experience that is part circus, part ballet, and part waking dream. The performance unfolds on a mesmerizing 95-foot-wide aquatic stage filled with 1.5 million gallons of water, where performers leap, dive, and appear to fly, often becoming one with the water itself.

Yet what truly sets “O” apart is not just the stunning artistry of the 76 performers who command the stage above; it’s the invisible yet vital world below the water’s surface. During every performance, 14 technical team members work underwater, breathing through concealed apparatus while expertly maneuvering scenery, props, and equipment in a choreographed sequence to create the seamless magic that captivates audiences. As Niall Sheehy, the production’s company manager, notes, “There’s a whole world of action underneath the water that you would have no concept of as an audience member.” This underwater crew is part of a larger team of more than 150 technicians, divers, and stage crew members, all dedicated to revealing a flawless performance where stages rise, sink, and vanish entirely beneath the waves.

The skilled acrobats and gymnasts who grace the stage of “O”—including an impressive eight Olympians, more than found in any other show—must master an entirely new set of skills tailored to water-based performances. These athletes, having spent years honing their craft, learn to plunge into water from staggering heights while maintaining their artistic integrity. With two shows each day, amounting to around 500 performances a year, the cast constantly refines their artistry and challenges themselves to push the boundaries of human endurance and creativity.

“These world-class performers are perpetually looking to grow and test the limits of human performance,” Sheehy explains. “It’s natural for our performers to be focused on elevating the complexity and the technical aspects of what they do daily.” Complementing this drive for growth, the artistic staff—led by the artistic director—works continuously to inject freshness into the performances. This collaboration ensures that the show remains vibrant and ever-evolving.

Even if you’ve attended “O” before, each viewing offers a fresh perspective. The show’s intricate layers mean that returning audience members can discover new details and nuances they might have overlooked previously. “It doesn’t matter how often you watch ‘O,’ you will notice something new each time,” states Sheehy. “It’s a living, breathing show.” Audiences are left with the lasting impression that no two performances are ever quite the same, creating a dynamic experience worth revisiting time and again.
