The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority has reported an unexpected decline in visitor numbers. According to gaming recruiter Mark Wayman, this downturn is alarming, as he stated, “the worst I’ve ever seen.” Domestic air traffic at Harry Reid International Airport dropped by 4% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, indicating a potential seismic shift in consumer behavior.

The Cost of Staying on the Strip

One primary reason travelers are reconsidering their trips to Las Vegas is the skyrocketing costs associated with staying on the Strip. From 2015 to early 2025, average nightly room rates have soared from approximately $124 to nearly $210, marking an astonishing increase of nearly 70%. Major hotel chains like MGM and Caesars have reported average rates nearing $200 per night at the beginning of 2025.

For those seeking luxury, properties such as the Bellagio, Aria, and Wynn present even higher price tags, pushing average room rates up to around $214 per night, according to Kayak. Travelers often find that booking during mid-week can yield better deals, but this can be difficult to navigate amid a slew of special events, concerts, and sporting events that may drive prices upward.

The Hidden Costs of Resort Fees

However, the nightly rate is just the beginning of the financial burden. An often-overlooked aspect of booking hotel rooms in Las Vegas is the infamous “resort fee.” This mandatory additional charge, which ranges from $45 to $55 per night before taxes, can turn what seems like a bargain into a wallet-draining expense. At high-end properties, this fee can climb to around $62 with taxes, leading to a staggering final bill for what seemed like an affordable night’s stay.

To illustrate this point: a room advertised at $129 can end up costing nearly $190 due to these added charges. In fact, of 90 surveyed hotels in 2025, the average resort fee had already increased by 11% year-over-year, landing at about $40.04 before tax.

The Comparison to Disney World

Interestingly, the struggle of Las Vegas mirrors that of another famed tourist destination: Disney World. Just as the increased costs at Disney theme parks have deterred some visitors, the Las Vegas Strip is experiencing similar pushback from a segment of travelers weary of inflated prices. What once was considered a budget-friendly escape has evolved into a costly venture, prompting many potential visitors to look elsewhere for more affordable fun.

The Shift in perception is palpable, and potential visitors are now weighing their options more critically than ever. With travel costs rising and experiences potentially limited by financial constraints, some feel the allure of Las Vegas has dimmed significantly.
