Disturbing Allegations in North Las Vegas: The Case of Roderick Duke

In North Las Vegas, a deeply troubling incident has unfolded involving Roderick Duke, a 40-year-old man accused of serious crimes including kidnapping and domestic violence. According to arrest documents obtained by Channel 13, Duke allegedly assaulted the mother of his 10-month-old daughter and threatened both her life and that of their child. These grave accusations have shocked the community, especially given the events that led to an AMBER Alert being issued.

The Timeline of Events

The situation escalated early Thursday morning when police received multiple 911 calls reporting a woman screaming for help. Officers arrived at the scene to find the woman in distress, alleging that Duke had physically assaulted her. She also reported that Duke had taken their baby, Leilani Williams, along with both of their cell phones.

As police began their search, the woman managed to contact Duke using a neighbor’s phone. During this conversation, Duke allegedly issued a chilling warning: if the police were contacted, both he and the child would "be on the news."

The Pursuit and AMBER Alert

Following initial reports, police tracked Duke’s phone and connected with a friend who lived nearby. This friend disclosed that he had attempted to reason with Duke, encouraging him to return the child. In a bid to help, the friend ordered an Uber for Duke, which the driver later described as suspicious behavior—Duke was reportedly vigilant about avoiding police.

Duke was dropped off at his apartment at approximately 5:40 a.m. But by this time, the situation had reached a critical stage. The baby’s mother moved her belongings out of the apartment and feared returning due to Duke’s violent behavior. By 7:57 a.m., police were attempting to garner public assistance through media outlets, and an AMBER Alert was ultimately issued around 9 a.m.

What is particularly alarming is that at the time the alert went out, Duke and the baby were already back in their apartment, unbeknownst to law enforcement. Fortunately, authorities located the baby unharmed before 10:05 a.m., and Duke was taken into custody.

Charges and Allegations

Duke is now facing several serious charges, including first-degree kidnapping, child abuse or neglect, and domestic battery. Following his arrest, he was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correctional Center.

In interviews conducted by investigators, Duke claimed that the incident was merely a domestic dispute and insisted he had "never hit a woman." However, the mother provided detailed accounts that contradicted his statements, including physical signs of assault such as contusions and abrasions.

The police documentation paints a grim picture. They confirmed the mother’s injuries and stated that there was sufficient evidence to move forward with his arrest.

Ongoing Investigations and Community Impact

This case continues to unfold as Duke is set for a preliminary hearing on March 24. Given the serious nature of these allegations, it has ignited discussions about domestic violence, child safety, and the effectiveness of intervention systems such as AMBER Alerts.

The swift response from law enforcement in this instance likely prevented a more tragic outcome, and the community is now left grappling with the chilling implications of this disturbing event. As details emerge, the focus will remain on the safety and well-being of the child and accountability for those who endanger others.
