Elvira and Thirteenth Floor Take Over the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

Elvira: The Enduring Legend of Halloween

It’s been over four decades since Cassandra Peterson unleashed her iconic alter ego, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, onto the world. Originally appearing on the classic 80s horror series Movie Macabre, Elvira quickly became a pop culture sensation, pioneering a unique blend of horror parody and campy charm. Her sultry appearance, quick wit, and engaging commentary on horror films garnered her a loyal fanbase that remains vibrant to this day.

The Rise of Elvira

From her humble beginnings, Elvira’s cultural footprint expanded rapidly. Inspired by earlier horror hosts like Vampira, Peterson’s Elvira took it up a notch with her bodacious yet humorous approach to film commentary. She garnered national syndication, leading to a feature film and a vast, devoted following. Over the years, her sultry silhouette became a Halloween staple, thanks in part to her long-standing partnership with Knott’s Berry Farm, where she created memorable Halloween experiences for fans.

A Fresh Start with Thirteenth Floor Entertainment

Recently, Peterson announced her new collaboration with Thirteenth Floor Entertainment, producers of the popular Los Angeles Haunted Hayride. “I love Knott’s,” she shared in an interview, “but I’m really happy to partner with Thirteenth Floor because it was getting kind of repetitive. I’m happy to inject some fresh, new energy into the character.” The partnership signals an exciting new chapter in Elvira’s storied legacy, refreshing the character while still maintaining her timeless horror flair.

The Haunted Hayride Experience

Launched in 2009 and acquired by Thirteenth Floor in 2018, the Los Angeles Haunted Hayride promises to weave Elvira into its narrative fabric in inventive ways. Chris Stafford, CEO of Thirteenth Floor, detailed this process, revealing that the Hayride takes place in a fictional town named Midnight Falls, eternally stuck in the 1980s and celebrating its annual Halloween festival. This setting provides the perfect backdrop for Elvira’s dark yet comedic elements.

Every year, the Hayride experience is reimagined. The 2025 edition will feature an “FM radio-style” audio segment titled Elvira After Dark, delivering thematic playlists and quirky commercials alongside the ride’s chilling sights. Guests can expect exciting new attractions, including “Elvira’s Trick or Treat Mayhem,” a maze inspired by Elvira’s character complete with themed décor and experiences.

Merchandising Magic

Elvira’s influence extends beyond her on-screen appearances. Peterson has turned her character into a lucrative enterprise with merchandise that caters to horror aficionados year-round. The collaboration with Thirteenth Floor is set to bring exclusive items to her dedicated fanbase, including t-shirts, retro collectibles, and even a special apron that mimics Elvira’s iconic dress.

Peterson’s upcoming cookbook, Elvira’s Cookbook From Hell, is another exciting venture, packed with spooky recipes and entertaining tips. Scheduled for release in September, it follows her successful memoir, Yours Cruelly, Elvira. This extensive portfolio not only showcases her talent but also solidifies her as a multifaceted brand in the Halloween industry.

Halloween: A Growing Phenomenon

Peterson describes the evolution of Halloween over the years, noting that it has morphed into a colossal industry, rivaling even Christmas in spending. The growing enthusiasm for Halloween isn’t limited to just October anymore; “Summerween” celebrations and conventions like Midsummer Scream have broadened the festivities, illustrating that dark culture enthusiasts embrace the season year-round.

Community Connection

The West Coast boasts a close-knit community of dark culture fans eager to celebrate Halloween. This passion facilitates unique collaborations and experiences that cater to their fervent desire for spooky escapism. As Stafford mentioned, the partnership with Peterson aims to create immersive experiences and retail opportunities that resonate with fans across the nation.

Legacy of Elvira

Reflecting on her iconic character, Peterson remarked, “Elvira has become a character that transcends me.” This statement underscores Elvira’s place in the cultural zeitgeist, comparable to Santa Claus during the holidays. With her striking persona and enduring popularity, Elvira remains a quintessential element of Halloween, ensuring her legacy lives on for generations to come.
