Risk of equine virus casts shadow over major Las Vegas rodeo event

The Impact of Equine Herpesvirus on the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo

Introduction to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo

Every December, Las Vegas transforms from a bustling city to a vibrant cowboy town as it hosts the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (NFR). This prestigious event, often referred to as the "Super Bowl of Rodeo," attracts thousands of rodeo enthusiasts, including riders and their horses. This year, however, the event is overshadowed by a serious equine health concern.

The Outbreak of EHV-1

The outbreak of the equine herpesvirus 1 (EHV-1) has raised alarm bells, especially in 2025. Traditionally, riders would proudly enter the arena on horseback, showcasing their horses alongside one another. However, due to health regulations, riders took to the arena on foot, keeping their horses away from the crowd to prevent potential risks.

EHV-1 is no stranger to the equestrian community; however, this year’s outbreak has been particularly concerning. With rising cases in various U.S. states coinciding with the NFR, the environment has become tense. Horse hotels in the area report significant drops in occupancy, affecting local economies reliant on the influx of cattlemen and their steeds. Some anticipated events have even been canceled entirely.

Symptoms and Health Precautions

The equine herpesvirus typically manifests through cold-like symptoms such as coughing and runny noses. However, the neurological form of the virus poses a more significant threat, leading to staggering, inability to stand, and in severe cases, death. Peter Rolfe, Nevada’s state veterinarian, emphasizes the importance of monitoring horses closely, advising owners to check their horses’ temperatures daily and minimize interactions with other equines.

The protocol if a horse shows signs of illness is strict: immediate isolation and cooperation with state veterinarians for safe transportation and quarantine back to their home.

The Spread Across States

So far, at least 60 horses have been reported infected across several states, but Nevada has remained unscathed. The mortality rate for those contracting the severe neurological form of EHV-1 can range from 15% to 30%. As a precautionary measure, horse owners like Kristine Weitz, the owner of Fly Again Ranch Horse Boarding and Hotel, have found that many are choosing to stay away from the event altogether, cancelling reservations out of fear for their animals’ safety.

Travel Challenges for Competitors

For those who do decide to participate, traveling across state lines with horses poses additional complications. Taylor Lawson, who drove her horses from New Waverly, Texas, faced a daunting 22-hour journey without breaks to avoid red tape surrounding health paperwork and vet checks in transit. Upon arrival in Las Vegas, precautions continue as Lawson vigilantly checks for symptoms while ensuring her horses avoid close contact with others.

Enhanced Regulations in Nevada

To contain the outbreak, Nevada officials have implemented stringent measures. Each horse entering the state requires an entry permit accompanied by a veterinarian’s certification. This certification assures that the horse hasn’t been at a location with confirmed EHV-1 cases in the preceding 21 days.

The Thomas & Mack Center, hosting the NFR, has further escalated safety protocols. More than 450 horses residing on the grounds must remain there for the duration of the competition. Group tours are prohibited, and strict limits are enforced on the number of people allowed in stables, recognizing the risk of virus transmission through human contact.

Sanitation and Care Measures

Additional preventive measures include separating stalls with walls to stop horses from touching each other and intensive cleaning protocols for all equipment used within the stables. Regular sanitation practices, including the use of disinfectants on high-contact areas like water troughs, are now standard operations guided by the overarching principle of minimizing interaction and potential contagion.

Adjustments to Event Programming

In light of the situation, even the South Point Hotel and Casino, which houses around 3,500 horses for the NFR, has enacted modified schedules. Certain events, like the horsemanship segment of the Miss Rodeo America Pageant and the National Finals Breakaway Roping, have been canceled or postponed to prioritize the health of all participants.

The Commitment to Horse Welfare

Despite the challenges faced this year, the overall sentiment among organizers and participants is clear: the welfare of the horses is paramount. This commitment drives decisions made by both the event organizers and individual horse owners. As South Point’s arena general manager Steve Stallworth notes, the potential for loss motivates intense caution and thorough action.

In an environment where tradition meets modern health concerns, the NFR maintains its vibrant spirit while adapting to challenges, ensuring that the safety of the animals remains at the heart of every decision made.
