Unifying Community Efforts: The Las Vegas 9/11 Day Meal Pack Event

On September 11, 2025, a remarkable display of community spirit unfolded in Southern Nevada as nearly 500 volunteers gathered for a meaningful cause. In recognition of the federally-acknowledged September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance—commonly known as “9/11 Day”—these dedicated individuals came together to pack approximately 130,000 healthy, non-perishable meals. This act echoed the profound unity and goodwill that swept across America in the wake of the tragic events of 2001, reminding us all of our capacity to support one another.

A Day of Service and Reflection

The event not only marked the 24th anniversary of the September 11 attacks but also coincided with Hunger Action Month, a vital initiative aimed at raising awareness about food insecurity in America. The meals meticulously packed during this event were destined for Three Square Food Bank, a cornerstone of hunger relief in the region. They were specifically targeted to support local individuals and families in need, including beneficiaries from the UNLV Food Pantry.

Collaborative Spirit at the Thomas & Mack Center

From 9 to 11 a.m., the atmosphere at the Thomas & Mack Center was electric with anticipation. The event kicked off with an opening ceremony filled with emotional resonance. Elizabeth Hunterton, chief development officer of Three Square Food Bank, welcomed attendees, setting a tone of gratitude and hope. The moment of silence, led by Retired Lieutenant Jay D’Angelo of the Injured Police Officers Fund, poignantly reminded participants of the sacrifices made on that fateful day. Adding a melodic touch to the ceremony was Lorena Peril, lead vocalist of FANTASY at Luxor Las Vegas, whose rendition of “America the Beautiful” inspired attendees and touched hearts.

Engagement and Entertainment

As volunteers settled into the task at hand, engaging cheerleaders Liam and Tim from Thunder From Down Under, along with performers Ashton, Abby, and Mandy from FANTASY, added a layer of enthusiasm. Their spirited encouragement helped fuel the energy in the room, creating an uplifting environment for participants. The event culminated with a significant announcement from Erick Harper, director of athletics for UNLV, who revealed the staggering number of meals packed and expressed heartfelt thanks to all involved.

Addressing Food Insecurity: A Nationwide Crisis

According to Feeding America, a staggering 47 million Americans grapple with food insecurity, affecting every county across the nation. This alarming statistic highlights the importance of initiatives such as the Las Vegas Meal Pack for 9/11 Day, serving as a critical lifeline for many in the community. This inaugural event joined a larger movement, with 25 large-scale volunteer projects planned across 24 cities nationwide. Spearheaded by the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which commenced its observance in 2002, the goal was to engage over 30,000 individuals to pack more than 9 million meals for food-insecure Americans, emphasizing the collective commitment to service on this poignant day.

A Commitment to Service and Partnership

The 9/11 Day Meal Pack Program bore the endorsement of national sponsors like AmeriCorps, Reliance, Inc., and Delta Air Lines, showcasing the collaborative effort behind this initiative. Support also flowed from various other organizations, including MUFG, Holland & Knight, and the Pfizer Foundation. This broad partnership underlines the importance of community involvement and corporate social responsibility in tackling pressing social issues together.

Local Involvement at its Core

The Las Vegas community was notably represented, with over 25 companies and organizations contributing to the success of the meal pack event. Western Alliance Bank stood out as a lead sponsor, surrounded by reputable companies like Delta Air Lines, Macy’s, and Taco Bell, demonstrating their commitment to fighting hunger. This strong local partnership not only bolstered the event’s impact but exemplified how diverse sectors can unite for a common good.
