Remembering Deborah Jean Ristau: A Life of Adventure and Warmth
Early Life in Santa Rosa
Deborah Jean Ristau, affectionately known as “Debbie” in her younger years, was born on September 13, 1957, and spent her formative years in the picturesque surroundings of Santa Rosa, California. The daughter of Melvin L. Ristau and Jessie (Det) Elizabeth Ristau (nee Stickel), Debbie grew up with two older brothers, Ronald and Randall. The family made their home on Dowling Court, where the early bonds of childhood were forged amid the vibrant life of the community.
Attending Proctor Terrace School, Santa Rosa Junior High School, and graduating from Santa Rosa High School in 1975, Debbie’s educational journey was marked by the steady support and camaraderie of her brothers. Her childhood was filled with the laughter and mischief familiar to many siblings, building memories that would last a lifetime.
A Career in the Exciting World of Casinos
As she moved into adulthood, Debbie explored a variety of jobs but found her true calling as a dealer at Harrah’s Casino. Here, she thrived in the bright lights and energetic atmosphere, mastering the art of dealing “21” and spinning the roulette wheel. Her charm and skill made her a favorite among patrons. But her adventures didn’t stop there; she also ventured to Las Vegas, where she worked at Manheim’s Auto Dealer, an auto auction house. These experiences, which showcased her lively spirit and zest for life, created a tapestry of stories she would often recount with a glint in her eye.
A Passion for Sailing
Debbie’s spirit for adventure took her beyond the confines of the casino to the open seas. She embraced her love for sailing, embarking on memorable journeys with friends aboard a 32-foot boat. Her escapades included navigating the breathtaking coast of California, from the bustling San Francisco Bay up to Alaska’s Inner Passage. The awe-inspiring sunsets and formidable waves embedded lasting impressions of freedom and excitement. Those experiences were not merely trips but affirmations of her adventurous heart and love for the beauty of the ocean.
Life in Lake Tahoe
Later in life, Debbie found solace in South Lake Tahoe, a place she lovingly referred to as her "heaven on earth." The beauty of the surroundings resonated with her spirit, and she spent joyous years working at local casinos while reveling in the stunning vistas of Lake Tahoe. This region became pivotal in her life, allowing her to connect deeply with nature while creating cherished memories with friends and loved ones.
However, as her health began to decline due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), her beloved mountains proved challenging. The decision to relocate echoed her resilience and adaptability, leading her to spend her remaining years with her brother Randall in San Francisco. From their home, she gazed over the majestic Pacific Ocean, finding comfort in reminiscing about her sailing days, reflecting a spirit unbroken even in the face of adversity.
Family Ties
Debbie’s family remained at the core of her life. Survived by her brother Randall, she also leaves behind her niece Jesse Kornberg, niece Jenne Ristau, and grandniece Isabela Kornberg, all based in San Francisco. The warmth of familial love provided her with immeasurable strength and support throughout her life. Additionally, she cherished the closeness of her Aunt Sue Larbre of Sonoma and her step-brother James Liddle of Santa Rosa. These family ties were a testament to her values, anchoring her in times of both joy and challenge.
