Las Vegas ‘Star Wars’ Spoof Shows That the Humor Is Here to Stay | Kats | Entertainment

Comedy and Burlesque: A Galactic Blend at “Empire Strips Back”

What’s great about comedy is the instant verdict: laughter or silence, pass or fail. I found myself thoroughly entertained at “Empire Strips Back — A Burlesque Parody,” which opened on May 4th at the Rio. (Yes, the last time we’ll invoke that pun!) From the very beginning, this intergalactic romp had me hooked.

A Bold Opening

The show kicks off with a surprising twist: Jabba the Hutt and Princess Leia, bound by a chain, slithering across the stage to the beat of “Hypnotize” by Notorious B.I.G. The unexpected combination of characters and music sets the tone for an audacious performance. Jabba, an undeniably imposing figure, holds the stage with a presence unlike any other seen at the Rio, a venue that previously hosted the iconic Chippendales.

Hilarious Acts and Nostalgic Melodies

As the production unfolds, the innovative takes on well-known characters continue. The Landspeeder gets an amusing sponge bath courtesy of Leia, while Han Solo and Chewbacca deliver a saucy dance number featuring a medley of “It’s Tricky” by Run DMC and “I Want it That Way” by the Backstreet Boys. The unexpected sight of Darth Vader stripping down to a sleek black bodysuit adds another layer of hilarity, and C3PO energetically grooves to “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I.

The Emcee: A Stellar Performance

The emcee for the evening is Eric Turner, hailing from Oakland. His portrayal of Lando Calrissian’s nephew offers a witty narrative thread throughout the performance. Kicking off with a classic quip, “If you’re not a ‘Star Wars’ fan and like the show, tell your friends, because you’re the only ones with friends to tell,” he sets a lighthearted tone for the evening.

Backstory and Production Origins

“Empire Strips Back” is helmed by David Foster, a seasoned performer previously seen at Spiegelworld, and now residing in a revitalized space at the Rio under the ownership of Dreamscape Co. The production boasts a rich history, having played in metropolitan centers like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and even London, capturing the ethos of “Star Wars” while adding a fresh, sultry twist.

Balancing Familiarity with Freshness

At its core, the performance embodies a clever balance between familiarity and originality. While the characters are instantly recognizable, they’re re-imagined in a way that removes the rigid sci-fi persona often associated with “Star Wars.” The costumes, particularly for the “Stormies,” are designed to show more skin and allow for dynamic choreography, adding a playful edge to the production.

Scene Highlights

Some segments of the show, like Jabba’s moments and the grand finale, are intricately produced with high energy. Others, like Leia and R2D2 performing to “Diamonds” by Rihanna and “Dirrrty” by Christina Aguilera, bring a very cabaret vibe, perfectly blending burlesque with familiar tunes.

Audience Engagement: The Intermission Debate

Audiences are treated to a lengthy 20-minute intermission, which has sparked conversations about its necessity. While it allows for a social experience at the now Star Wars-themed bar—the former Flirt lounge—it raises questions about audience retention post-intermission. Las Vegas productions have typically shied away from such breaks, making this choice a bold one for “ESB.”

Nonetheless, this time-tested tradition enables attendees to mingle and enjoy cocktails, with many capturing fleeting moments by posing with the Landspeeder on display while sipping themed drinks.

Overcoming Intermission Challenges

Interestingly, the show acknowledges the history of audience walkouts during intermissions, a trend that dates back at least two decades. Foster’s decision to include a break allows for a clearer transition between Acts while fostering engagement, even if it means a few missed moments, like Boba Fett’s performance to “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N’ Roses.

The Experience: Sticky and Engaging

The immersive experience is as sticky as Jabba himself, yet audiences remain captivated. Personally, while I’m not a dedicated “Star Wars” fan, I found the show to be an absolute delight and have encouraged my friends to check it out. With nods to the playful “Stormies,” it promises to light up anyone’s evening.

Cool Hang Alert: Adding to the Night’s Adventures

For those looking to extend their night out, “Cigars, Bourbon & Soul” awaits at Tap & Ash, located at 1606 S. Commerce Street in the Arts District. Headlined by Matt Seward alongside Richie and Angelo, this event offers a cozy, smoke-friendly vibe. Hosted by Ms. Jones (aka Black Butterfly), it’s a laid-back, no-cover experience that enhances the night in a distinctly enjoyable way.

By capturing the essence of burlesque and combining it with a beloved universe, “Empire Strips Back” channels the humor and charisma that makes both comedy and “Star Wars” so enduring. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a casual observer, this show provides a uniquely engaging experience full of laughter and playful nostalgia.
