Las Vegas authorities reveal more information about the shooting that resulted in the deaths of a man and a child held hostage.

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — A tragic incident unfolded in Las Vegas on Tuesday, leading to a devastating police-involved shooting that left a man and a child hostage dead. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) shared critical insights during a media briefing on Thursday, where Assistant Sheriff Bryan Peterson provided details about the tense situation that unfolded at an apartment complex located on South Maryland Parkway.

Timeline of Events
Officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 1:19 a.m., which reported a domestic violence situation. The caller, identified as the suspect’s partner, claimed that 28-year-old Quinton Baker had threatened both her and her child. “He’s threatening to kill me and my son. He literally beat me downstairs,” she stated in the call, highlighting the immediate danger the family faced.

Upon arrival, officers quickly learned from the woman that Baker had pointed a gun at her, issuing a chilling ultimatum: “If you don’t tell them [the police] to call this s— off and they try to come up these stairs, I’m blowing the child’s brains out and I’m blowing mine out,” Peterson recounted. This harrowing context set the stage for what quickly escalated upon police intervention.

A Volatile Encounter
The situation became increasingly critical as Baker emerged from the apartment carrying his 3-year-old child. He was reportedly holding a gun to the child’s chest, defiant toward the officers and refusing to heed their commands. Capt. Andrew Wiggins described Baker’s approach toward the officers, which prompted them to discharge their firearms. “The suspect approached the officers, still holding the juvenile hostage… simultaneously, the suspect, while pointing his firearm in the direction of the juvenile, discharged the firearm,” he explained.

In a chaotic exchange of gunfire, both Baker and the child were struck. The urgency of the situation was further underscored by an officer’s immediate action to rush the injured child to safety, carrying him over 325 yards to medical personnel stationed nearby. Tragically, the child was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after, while Baker was declared dead at the scene.

The Aftermath
Investigation findings revealed that the child suffered critical injuries, with an autopsy determining that he sustained three gunshot wounds. Notably, two of these were classified as “close-quarter” wounds, which investigators established were inflicted by Baker when he discharged the weapon. Additionally, the incident had broader implications, contributing to rising domestic violence call statistics in the area, nearing 100 calls within the past week alone.

Body camera footage from the incident highlights the urgency and tension faced by the responding officers. An intricate forensic investigation revealed that Baker had fired at least seven rounds; two of these were discharged towards a vehicle leaving the scene before police arrived.

Officers Jonathan Lo and Damon O’Donnell were later identified as the ones who used their weapons during the confrontation, firing a total of five rounds. Lo discharged three rounds from a rifle, while O’Donnell fired two shots from a handgun. Asst. Sheriff Peterson emphasized the split-second decisions required of law enforcement in such high-stakes scenarios, noting, “In this situation, officers had milliseconds to make a decision. Their ultimate goal was to save that baby’s life.”

The Path Forward
Had he survived, Baker would have faced severe charges including murder with a deadly weapon, kidnapping, and child abuse among others. The aftermath of this horrific incident continues to underscore the critical need for effective responses to domestic violence, a theme reiterated by Peterson in his media briefing.
