What is the Las Vegas Mayor’s Fund?

### Addressing Homelessness and Affordability in Las Vegas

Las Vegas, known for its dazzling lights and vibrant entertainment, faces a challenging reality: a homelessness crisis intertwined with an increasing affordability gap. According to Sallie Doebler, CEO of The Mayor’s Fund for Las Vegas LIFE, this issue is not solely about housing but is connected to various underlying problems, including mental health and the availability of affordable housing solutions.

### The Role of The Mayor’s Fund

The Mayor’s Fund is pivotal in addressing quality of life issues for vulnerable populations in Las Vegas. With backing from significant local stakeholders, including the Vegas Golden Knights, Raiders, and Foley Entertainment Group, the organization works tirelessly to implement initiatives that uplift the community. Recently, they announced a $10 million fundraising campaign intended for the establishment of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial at the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex.

### Recent Wins for Local Residents

1. **Youth Sports Engagement**: One of the major successes achieved by The Mayor’s Fund is their commitment to youth engagement through sports. Grants have played an essential role in enabling children from low-income families to participate in youth sports programs. This initiative has positively impacted thousands, emphasizing the importance of healthy, engaging activities for youth development.

2. **Support for the Homeless and Their Pets**: Recognizing the deep bond between the homeless and their pets, The Mayor’s Fund has supported the only facility in the region that allows individuals experiencing homelessness to stay with their pets. The Courtyard Homeless Resource Center provides a low-barrier environment where pets can be safely housed while their owners access vital resources, ensuring that nobody has to make the heartbreaking choice between companionship and support.

3. **Educational Opportunities**: Partnering with Intermountain Health and Edpath Boost Academy, The Mayor’s Fund offers customized ACT preparation for students across Clark County. This program has shown promising results, with participants raising their scores by an average of 6 points in 2025, opening doors to scholarship opportunities and paving the way for future success.

4. **Workforce Development in the Historic Westside**: Collaboration with the College of Southern Nevada has led to the creation of a state-of-the-art workforce training facility in the Historic Westside. This initiative aims to equip the young population of underserved neighborhoods with the skills necessary for tomorrow’s jobs, reflecting a commitment to community empowerment and economic prosperity.

5. **Nevada State Veterans Memorial**: The relocation of the Nevada State Veterans Memorial Park is underway, providing a fitting tribute to military personnel. The memorial, featuring 18 bronze statues, seeks to offer veterans a serene space for reflection and healing.

### Areas for Improvement

While progress has been made, numerous challenges remain. Education is a focal point, and The Mayor’s Fund insists on supporting early childhood learning initiatives, such as the Strong Start GO! mobile Pre-K bus that takes education directly to low-income neighborhoods. This proactive approach helps ensure children are ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.

Addressing the needs of the unhoused presents another critical challenge. The Campus for Hope project aims to establish a navigation facility that will provide resources tailored specifically for homeless individuals, complementing existing services and paving the way for better support systems.

### Future Outlook for Las Vegas

Looking ahead, the future of Las Vegas appears promising, albeit with challenges to address. The resort industry will always remain a crucial part of the economy, but the introduction of professional sports teams has invigorated various ancillary industries. The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) is under new leadership, focusing on sectors like biotech which could add diversity to the local economy.

Land availability continues to be a pressing concern, but innovative urban redevelopment strategies are being pursued to maximize existing spaces. Leadership within the city’s Economic & Urban Development team is exploring creative solutions to revitalize areas such as the Historic Westside and the Las Vegas Medical District.

Water conservation also remains a topic of focus, particularly given the region’s arid climate. Fortunately, experts at the Southern Nevada Water Authority are leading the way in sustainability practices, assuring residents that future resources will be managed wisely.
